When is Cyber Monday 2021?

Cyber Monday gets underway on November 29. We expect to see a lot of similar deals as to what was on sale during Black Friday but check back here often as we'll be updating with new information and discounts when we can.

How do we select the best Cyber Monday deals?

We evaluate deals across retailers, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy to find the best price across the internet. We also look at price history to find historically low prices and rare discounts.

Should I expect shipping delays?

Shipping delays are possible during the holidays, so we recommend buying early to avoid late deliveries. Retailers typically provide estimated delivery times on their product pages, so you can better gauge the likelihood of getting your purchases on time. To be extra safe, you can factor in additional days in case of carrier delays.

An even better option is to opt for in-store pick up, which is offered by Buy Buy Baby, Target, and Walmart for many products.

It's November 29, which means Cyber Monday is live. Cyber Monday is explicitly an online-shopping event — even more so than Black Friday — and it's historically brought some of the sales weekend's lowest prices. While Cyber Monday is officially live now, many retailers are continuing Black Friday deals right now.

Cyber Monday is a particularly great time to shop for tech, smart home, and gift cards, but categories like kitchen and home, as well as personal care are also very active.  Stock is typically more limited than Black Friday, which means acting fast is key to getting a good deal. Bookmark this page and check back throughout the day to keep up with discounts without spending all day combing the internet; we'll do the heavy lifting for you.

At Insider Reviews, we test products all year and track their price history so we can give you solid buying advice during big shopping events like Cyber Monday. Tons of deals are available now on products we love and trust, and we're highlighting the best ones below.

When is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday falls on the Monday after Black Friday every year. In 2021, the shopping event will land on November 29.

As a continuation of sorts to Black Friday, Cyber Monday gives shoppers another opportunity to save on tech, home goods, clothing, and more that you might've missed while digesting Thanksgiving dinner. Unlike Black Friday, though, Cyber Monday is entirely online.

What time does Cyber Monday start?

Cyber Monday officially begins at 12 a.m. ET on November 29. That said, the event is expected to carry over many deals from Black Friday, so some discounts are already available.

What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday began as the online version of Black Friday, where online retailers offered big discounts to match their brick-and-mortar counterparts. Now, Cyber Monday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, often surpassing even Black Friday in terms of revenue and sales.

Previously, the main distinction between Black Friday and Cyber Monday was that Black Friday focused on in-store sales and Cyber Monday on online sales. But as shopping habits have increasingly favored the internet, shoppers can look forward to a very online-focused Cyber Monday and Black Friday.

Cyber Monday offers a great opportunity to save on all your holiday gifts

How long do Cyber Monday sales last?

Though Cyber Monday sales once took place on Monday only, we've seen them extend to longer and longer durations, with a handful lasting through the rest of the week.

However, the best discounts we see are in limited supply and expire soon after they become available.

What's better, Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

With more and more buyers shopping online, the debate over which shopping holiday wins, is practically moot. Both events will be held predominantly online, and more than a few deals overlap. In fact, many Black Friday deals become Cyber Monday deals when the dates change.

If possible, buyers should shop on both holidays. We've seen different products receive better discounts on each day, and the deals that each retailer offers will vary.

Generally speaking, consumers shopping for big-ticket items, such as laptops, TVs, and kitchen appliances, can expect more opportunities on Black Friday. Shoppers looking for last year's models, smart home gadgets, digital subscriptions, and gift cards will likely find more luck during Cyber Monday.

What should I buy during Cyber Monday?

If a retailer offers Black Friday deals, it's a near guarantee that it will offer Cyber Monday deals, too. Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart are some noteworthy retailers that we know will participate in the shopping event, with deals across many product categories.

We will likely see massive discounts on some of our favorite direct-to-consumer products during Cyber Monday, such as retail startups like Leesa and Brooklinen. For some online stores, Cyber Monday (or Cyber Week) will be one of the few times of the year when their products see major markdowns.

Will there be Cyber Monday shipping delays?

Shipping delays and shopping holidays are inextricably linked, so there's always a risk of late deliveries.

To help you avoid the shipping crunch and get your stuff sooner, several retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Best Buy, offer in-store pickup and contactless curbside pickup. This means shoppers can grab their orders at a nearby location, provided that the retailer has it in stock.

Best Cyber Monday deals we saw last year

Last year, we saw a lot of great sales on Cyber Monday ranging from sitewide discounts to specific products. Everything from home and kitchen, to subscription services were on sale during last year's annual savings event.

Here are a few of the best Cyber Monday deals from 2020.

How we select the best Cyber Monday deals
  • We only choose products that meet our high standard of coverage, and that we've either used ourselves or researched carefully.
  • We compare the prices among top retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart and only include the deals that are better than all others offered (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals are at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.

Amazon Cyber Monday FAQsWhen does Amazon's Cyber Monday sale start?

Cyber Monday 2021 falls on November 29, but Amazon will likely have some deals lingering throughout the week.

What Cyber Monday deals should you buy at Amazon?

Amazon's Cyber Monday markdowns are as good as those offered during Black Friday and are on par with the Cyber Monday discounts from Best Buy, Target, and Walmart. We expect Amazon and its competition to price-match each other throughout Cyber Monday. Shoppers can find big savings on digital content, streaming media players, smart home products, and more.

We're seeing many products that are a repeat of what we saw during Prime Day. Right now, some of the best deals currently available include Fire tablets, the Kindle Paperwhite, and Roombas

During Cyber Monday, shoppers should pay attention to two types of deals: daily deals and Lightning deals. The former are one-day offers, usually grouped by brand or category, and change at the end of the day. The latter are limited-stock offers released throughout the day. We expect to see the best deals to come in the Lightning deal form.

Should I get Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime subscribers will get the most out of Amazon's Cyber Monday. We've found that shoppers can make up the cost of the subscription with their savings from shipping alone. If you don't shop Amazon often, but want to take advantage of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts, consider a $13 month-long membership. New members can sign up for a free 30-day trial with full benefits through most of the sales event.

Signing up is easy, and a subscription comes with many more benefits than just free two-day shipping.

Shoppers should also consider applying for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature credit card — for the 5% cashback on all Amazon purchases and a $100 gift card.

How do we choose the best Cyber Monday deals at Amazon?
  • We only choose products that meet our high standard of coverage, and that we've either tested, used in our daily lives, or researched carefully.
  • We will compare the prices against other retailers like Target and Best Buy and only included the deals that are the same or better (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals will be at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.

Japan, Israel, and Morocco ban all foreign travelers from entering over Omicron variant fears

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 16:11
Tokyo International Airport.
  • Japan, Israel and Morocco have all barred foreign travelers from entering the country.
  • It's the most strict measures imposed by nations in response to the newly detected Omicron variant.
  • The new B.1.1.529 variant was labeled a "variant of concern" status by the WHO on Friday.

Japan on Monday joined Israel and Morocco in barring foreign travelers from entering the country as nations worldwide make sweeping new travel restrictions over concerns about the new Omicron COVID-19 variant.

All foreigners will be banned from entering Japan starting at midnight on Monday as "an emergency evacuation precautionary measure," the Prime Minister's Office wrote on Twitter

Meanwhile, Israel's coronavirus cabinet on Saturday decided to close its international airport to foreign arrivals for two weeks, according to local media reports.

The cabinet also authorized an Israeli security agency to use cellphone monitoring to track cases of the Omicron variant through Thursday, the Prime Minister's Office said on Sunday.

Morocco's foreign ministry on Sunday said that it was suspending all flights to the North African country starting on Monday night for a two-week period.

The measures are the strictest taken by nations in response to the new B.1.1.529 variant, which was labeled a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization on Friday.

The Omicron variant — which was first identified in South Africa — contains multiple mutations that public health experts say might make it more transmissible or help it evade immunity from vaccines.

Scientists say research on the new variant will determine the threat Omicron poses as the pandemic enters its second full year.

Monday also marks the start of US travel restrictions from eight countries in southern Africa — South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Eswatini, Malawi, and Namibia — which the Biden administration announced on Friday.

And EU member states agreed on Friday to a similar ban on travel from countries in southern Africa.

But travel bans have been met with pushback and criticism. The US restricted travel to southern Africa, but similar bans have not been put in place for European nations where the variant has already been detected.

Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera wrote on Facebook on Sunday that the travel restrictions are based on "Afrophobia" and not science.

The WHO issued a statement on Sunday criticizing the measures, and said "they should not be unnecessarily invasive or intrusive, and should be scientifically based."

So far, there have been no confirmed cases of the new variant in the US, Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Monday.

"No confirmed cases, but obviously we're on high alert," he told Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos.

Virgil Abloh, Off-White founder and artist director of Louis Vuitton is dead at 41. Here's a look at the life of the luxury designer.

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 15:56
Virgil Abloh was one of the most popular designers of today.
  • Virgil Abloh, 41, was one of modern fashion's most popular designers.
  • He was known for being Louis Vuitton's menswear artistic director and the founder of Off-White.
  • He died on November 28 after a two-year battle with a rare form of heart cancer.

Virgil Abloh, 41, died on Sunday after a two-year battle with a rare form of cancer.

Abloh was regarded as one of the pioneers of high-end street fashion, or what he called the "post-streetwear movement," with roots in the classic streetwear that originated in hip-hop and skating culture. When the lines between luxury and streetwear were torn down, Abloh's influence was everywhere, from Balenciaga selling puffer jackets to Dior collaborating with Nike on limited edition Air Jordans to Louis Vuitton partnering with Supreme to Gucci working with legendary Harlem designer Dapper Dan.

As Business Insider previously reported, Louis Vuitton named Abloh its artistic director for menswear in 2018. This made him one of the few Black people to ever lead a top fashion house, and the first Black American to lead a French one.

Aside from Louis Vuitton, Abloh's own line, Off-White, established a reputable name for itself. Through Off-White, Abloh launched collaborations with partners such as NikeIkea, and even McDonald's

Keep reading to learn more about one of the most popular — and controversial — figures in the fashion industry.

Virgil Abloh was one of the most popular designers in the modern age. Known for his line, Off-White, he was also the artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear.

Virgil Abloh gained prominence in the last decade with the rise of luxury streetwear, with some noting him as being the trend's pioneer

He was the founder of Off-White, one of the top luxury streetwear brands in the world. Aside from its own collections, the brand and Abloh collaborated with furniture store Ikea, water company Evian, luggage brand Rimowa, Jimmy Choo, Sunglass Hut, and even McDonald's

Abloh had 6.9 million followers on Instagram and was good friends with his often-creative partner Kanye West. His designs have been seen on everyone from Rihanna, Beyonce, and model Hailey Baldwin

Who is Virgil Abloh?

Abloh was born in Rockford, Illinois, on September 30, 1980. His parents were immigrants from Ghana, and his mother was a seamstress, while his father was the manager of a paint company. According to a previous article by Friedman, it was Abloh's mother who taught him how to sew.

He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a BS in civil engineering in 2002. He then went on to receive a master's in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2006.

According to Vogue's Steff Yotka, the rumor is that, in 2002, on the day of Abloh's graduation from University of Wisconsin-Madison, he skipped his final critiques to meet with Kanye's then-manager John Monopoly

He told The Cut in 2017 that he didn't really know he could be a creative full-time. "I felt that a random Black kid from the suburbs of Chicago shouldn't be doing that," he said.

In his senior year, he took his first art history class, in which he learned about the Renaissance and Italian painter Caravaggio. "It flipped my head backward," he continued. "I'd spent so much time thinking practical things."

While finishing his master's degree at IIT, Abloh said, he saw a building that was under construction by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas. This helped spark his interest in fashion.

It was also during this time that he began to design his own clothes, and work on a blog known as The Brilliance.

In 2009, Abloh began a 6-month internship at Fendi in Rome alongside Kanye West.Kanye West (L) and Virgil Abloh (R)

Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke once told The New York Times that he was "impressed" with Abloh and West and how they "brought a whole new vibe to the studio and were disruptive in the best way."

He then went on to say that Abloh brought in a "new vocabulary to describe something as old-school as Fendi." Burke added that he would be following Abloh's career.

It was also around this time when Abloh and West began to be seen with the fashion crowds in Paris.

Abloh and West were seen outside of a Comme des Garçons show in Paris, photographed by Tommy Ton for Style.com.

Abloh told W magazine in 2017 that, at the time, they were just "a generation that was interested in fashion and weren't supposed to be there" and that they "saw this as our chance to participate and make current culture. In a lot of ways, it felt like we were bringing more excitement than the industry was."

In 2012, Abloh opened his first brand, Pyrex Vision.

As reported by Yotka at Vogue, Abloh had simply taken deadstock Ralph Lauren shirts, screen printed his company's name on it along with the number 23, and sold them for $550 each.

In 2013, Abloh closed Pyrex and opened Off-White. The company is based in Milan, and focuses primarily on streetwear. Abloh defined the brand as "the gray area between black and white as the color Off-White."

Off-White is known for its quotation marks around words, as pictured above. In an interview with W magazine, Abloh said he "loved" the idea that Off-White "can be questioned" and said he knew that one day, someone would "critique that Off-White is un-inspirational."

The brand is sold at Selfridges and Bergdorf Goodman, and has been sold at Barneys and Colette. He also had boutiques in Tokyo, Beijing, New York City, and Hong Kong.

In 2014, Abloh launched a women's wear line for Off-White, and began to show its collections during Paris Fashion Week.

"The end goal is to modernize fashion and steer a [fashion] house because I believe in the modernization of these storied brands," he said in a 2017 interview with The Cut. He went on to say at a lecture at Columbia that "[Off-White is] not a brand ... it's a faux-luxury product."

In 2015, Off-White was named a finalist for the prestigious LVMH Prize, although it lost to fellow designers Marques'Almeida and Jacquemus, respectively.

"Fashion is kinda a joke," he said in a 2017 interview with The Cut. "I don't get too bogged down in the clothes. For me, it's one big art project, just a canvas to show that fashion should have a brand that has someone behind it who cares about different contexts. Social things."

That same year, Beyoncé wore one of his sweatshirts in a music video with Nicki Minaj

The year 2017 was monumental for Abloh: He announced a collaborative exhibition with artist Takashi Murakami at the Gagosian, opened his first New York store, collaborated with Warby Parker and Jimmy Choo, and released a shoe with Nike.

He has also collaborated with artist Jenny Holzer for a political collection inspired by refugees, immigration, and Planned Parenthood. The exhibition with Murakami opened in October 2018.

"Young architects can change the world by not building buildings," he said at a lecture at Columbia in 2017. "You don't have to be a designer to be a designer," is his contradictory credo.

In 2017, Abloh won the British Fashion Award for Urban Luxe Brand.

In 2018, Virgil was appointed artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear. He was also listed as one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in the World.

"It is an honor for me to accept this position," he said in a statement announcing his appointment. "I find the heritage and creative integrity of the house are key inspirations and will look to reference them both while drawing parallels to modern times."

Abloh also designed the outfit Serena Williams wore to the 2018 U.S. Open. This outfit, along with the look he designed for Beyoncé as a choice to wear on the cover of Vogue, was chosen to be on exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

In 2019, Abloh was chosen to be on the board of the CFDA. He was also nominated for a CFDA Award for Menswear Designer of the Year, for his work with Off-White.

That same year, he gave an interview with Dazed magazine where he said that streetwear was "probably going to die soon."

As Business Insider previously reported, Abloh gave an interview with Dazed where he predicted that streetwear was going to die "soon."

"In my mind, how many more T-shirts can we own," he told Dazed. "How many more hoodies, how many sneakers?"

He then went on to say: "We're gonna hit this like, really awesome state of expressing your knowledge and personal style with vintage," he said. "There are so many clothes that are cool that are in vintage shops and it's just about wearing them."

Abloh came under fire last year for only donating $50 dollars to help bail out protesters that were arrested during the George Floyd movement.

Abloh wrote on Instagram, "The Miami community ~ I'm crazy inspired. For kids in the streets that need a bail funds [sic] for George Floyd protests, ... If it heals your pain, you can have it."

He then posted a screenshot of the $50 he donated to a bail fund. He made the donation after receiving backlash for attacking looters who broke into the store of one of his friends, designer Sean Wotherspoon. In a comment on Instagram regarding the looting, he said:

"You see the passion blood sweat and tears Sean puts in for our culture. This disgusts me. to the kids that ransacked his store and RSVP DTLA, and all our stores in our scene just know, that product staring at you in your home/apartment right now is tainted and a reminder of a person I hope you aren't. We're apart of a culture together. Is this what you want?? When you walk past him in the future please have the dignity to not look him in the eye, hang your head in shame."

However, Abloh's small donation sparked more backlash, as many people brought up the fact that $50 isn't even enough to buy a pair of socks from his brand Off White.

It was also pointed out that the people were arrested for protesting police brutality against black men, such as Abloh. And he was then accused of not doing all he can to help out the Black community whose culture propelled him to fame.

It was also noted that other celebrities, such as Chrissy Teigen, have donated as much as $200,000 to help protesters.

In February 2020, New York Times Fashion Director Vanessa Friedman wrote an article asking if Abloh could be considered the "the Karl Lagerfeld for Millennials."New York Times Fashion Director Vanessa Friedman

High-fashion Twitter quickly broke out into group discussions, and the conversation escalated once Abloh responded to Friedman, saying he would like to give a "lecture" on the article because "riffing online is far too low hanging fruit for such an easy and massive 'case & point."

Freidman responded by simply saying, "Come do it at the Times Center."

Abloh then sent Friedman an image from Joseph Beuys' 1974 art piece "I Like America and America Likes Me," in which the artist spent 8 hours with a coyote as a commentary on American society in the 1970s. Beuys said the coyote was America's spirit animal and that the piece commented on a nation divided along multiple lines, including the Vietnam War and relations between the majority and minority populations.

Friedman's response: "Am I the coyote in this picture? Are you Beuys? Are these relevant questions?" Abloh did not directly respond to those questions of Friedman's.

Friedman's question prompted a discussion and even a response from Abloh himself.Virgil Abloh was one of the most popular designers of today.

Friedman made a pretty compelling case as to why Abloh could at least, in some ways, be regarded as the "millennial" Karl Lagerfeld. Both, she wrote, made their marks "in part by embracing irony."

"Like Mr. Lagerfeld he has made a community that can seem like a cult of personality around himself," she wrote. "Like Mr. Lagerfeld, he speaks in rolling sentences and is a pleasure to listen to, especially in a world where the most celebrated names often seem to be tying themselves up in knots at the prospect of answering a question."

"Mr. Lagerfeld was criticized for doing too much, a lot of it not well enough, as is Mr. Abloh. So far, Mr. Abloh has proved himself best as a designer when building atop a foundation established by someone else," she continued. "His Vuitton is more interesting than his Off-White, which often seems like a pallid copy of other people's ideas, just as Mr. Lagerfeld's Chanel was more effective than his namesake label."

Still, his influence on the industry cannot be denied.(L) Model Karlie Kloss, (C) Virgil Abloh, (R) Model Gigi Hadid

As Business Insider previously reported, many luxury houses followed in the streetwear foundation that Abloh helped build. Balenciaga was selling puffer jackets and chunky sneakers, while hoodies and oversized logos were everywhere.

The "post-streetwear movement" saw Dior collaborating with Nike to make limited-edition Air JordansLouis Vuitton launching a collaboration with Supreme, and Gucci working with legendary Harlem designer Dapper Dan.

The lines between streetwear and luxury were torn down; suddenly, they were one and the same.

Aside from designing, Abloh was also a DJ, a creative and artistic director, and a social media influencer. He also had a collection of famous friends, and many people who aspire to dress, look, and be like him.

Bitcoin mining powers the system that oversees transactions and creates new bitcoins

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 15:55
The high cost of Bitcoin mining makes it impractical for many individuals.
  • Bitcoin mining involves confirming transactions and adding them to the blockchain.
  • As a reward for this work, miners receive newly issued bitcoins.
  • The cost of the hardware and energy involved can make profiting from Bitcoin mining difficult.
  • Visit Insider's Investing Reference library for more stories.

Bitcoin mining is a crucial part of the cryptocurrency's underlying technology through which transactions are verified and added to the digital ledger known as blockchain. The owners and operators of the computer systems that make up the decentralized Bitcoin network, called miners, receive newly created bitcoins as a reward for this work.

In this process, miners compete to solve highly complex mathematical equations. The first to figure it out receives the reward.

How does Bitcoin mining work?

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, meaning that it is a currency that leverages cryptography. It can be used to make payments without financial institutions or the government involved. The digital currency, which has managed to attract significant interest from investors, trades on numerous exchanges.

The cryptocurrency relies on a process called mining to confirm transactions and add them to the blockchain. In addition to verifying transactions, mining secures the network. It also prevents double spending, which is where someone uses the same funds twice.

The Bitcoin network was designed to allow interested parties to make transactions without going through intermediaries like banks. As a result, there must be some mechanism in place to determine which transactions occur.

Bitcoin solves this by leveraging a consensus mechanism, an algorithm that determines which transactions take place on the network. More specifically, Bitcoin uses a mechanism called proof-of-work.

Here are the basic steps involved in the mining process:

  1. Computers on the network gather transactions that took place in the last 10 minutes into a block and then compete to solve a complex math problem. The answer, known as hash, contains 64 characters.
  2. The miner or mining pool that solves the equation before everyone else shares the result with the other systems in the broader network. If the others verify that the solution is valid, the block is added to the blockchain.
  3. The winning miner then receives something called a mining reward, which as of November 2021 was 6.25 bitcoins. This incentive, which was originally 50 bitcoins, is reduced by 50% every four years during events that are referred to as halvings. Bitcoin has undergone these halving events in 2012, 2016, and 2020.

The race to solve these increasingly difficult cryptographic puzzles requires significant amounts of energy. But this cost is intentional, since the bitcoins created can be very lucrative.

Note: Bitcoin's proof-of-work mechanism is a key part of keeping transactions using the cryptocurrency secure.

Is Bitcoin mining profitable?

Bitcoin mining can be profitable, but there are several variables to consider, and miners can certainly face challenges.

"The profitability of Bitcoin mining depends on a multitude of factors, such as the cost of electricity, the mining equipment you're using, and the number of other people who are also mining Bitcoin," says Nick Spanos, co-founder of Zap Protocol, which provides infrastructure for decentralized applications.

Miners are paid in bitcoin every time they add a block to the blockchain. The price of bitcoin is highly volatile, so the value of this mining incentive can vary significantly.

For instance, in late November 2021, Bitcoin's price was $56,500, according to data from Markets Insider, which would make the mining incentive approximately $350,000. However, at the start of the year, the digital currency had a price of $29,300, which would make the mining reward about $183,000.

Further, the amount of bitcoin a miner receives from completing a block is cut in half every four years. In addition, it is becoming harder to mine the digital currency, as the mining difficulty, a measure of how tough it is to mine a block, has increased significantly over time.

Since proof-of-work involves hardware that requires a lot of electricity, energy costs are a major factor in profitability. This year, many miners have come to the US, as the nation has a wealth of renewable energy sources, and certain states benefit from some of the lowest energy prices around.

Another major consideration is hardware. An ASIC — a specialized computer used to mine bitcoin— can cost more than $10,000. Further, once energy expenses are included, mining a single bitcoin can cost thousands of dollars or tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the hardware used to do it.

"For most people living in the US and Western Europe, where per-unit electricity costs are high, it is difficult to turn a profit mining Bitcoin, but not impossible," says Spanow."People living in Asia have access to much cheaper electricity, but they are less likely to be able to afford the upfront cost of getting into Bitcoin mining."

Another key consideration is that generating a block could potentially take months or even years, depending on the level of computing power that is committed to it. In order to hedge risks like this, individual computers can participate in mining pools, which are groups of miners that work together to increase the odds that they will be able to successfully solve the needed mathematical problems and therefore mine blocks.

Note: The mining incentive, or reward provided for mining a block, is reduced by 50% every four years. It stood at 6.25 bitcoins as of November 2021.

What are the risks of Bitcoin mining?

There are several risks involved in mining bitcoin. The total expenses, including the cost of hardware and energy, can be significant. And there is no guarantee that an individual running a system on the network will see a return on their investment.

Further, governments can quickly change the equation, meaning that they can affect profitability very easily. A perfect example is mining bans. China, for example, banned bitcoin mining in 2021, which caused the nation's share of global mining to drop to almost zero.

Other countries, such as Nepal and Algeria, have also banned bitcoin mining by prohibiting all activity related to cryptocurrencies. Nepal outlawed mining in 2019 when it passed the Foreign Exchange Act. Algeria did the same thing the year before.

Bitcoin mining has also created some controversy due to concerns about how it affects the environment. Some industry observers have estimated that this activity has a carbon footprint similar to that of a small country.

This year, Swedish government officials wrote an open letter requesting that the European Union ban Bitcoin mining, emphasizing that this activity is reducing the chances that Sweden will be able to meet the goals it agreed to by the Paris Climate Agreement.

Is Bitcoin mining legal?

Bitcoin mining is legal in most countries, but several jurisdictions have banned this practice. China, one of the world's largest economies, has outlawed bitcoin mining. The nation's government has also prohibited all cryptocurrency transactions.

When explaining this aggressive action, analysts have said that China's authorities believe cryptocurrencies could interfere with the nation's plans to roll out a central bank digital currency, something it has been testing.

Algerian legislators reportedly started considering a total ban on digital currencies in 2017, stating that criminals might use cryptocurrencies for illegal activities such as money laundering, drug trafficking and tax evasion.

The financial takeaway

Bitcoin mining, which involves confirming transactions, can potentially be profitable. However, the extent to which this activity is profitable depends on several variables, including hardware costs, the expenses associated with energy and the price of Bitcoin.

It's not really feasible for many individuals to get involved with bitcoin mining, as doing so could involve investing thousands, or even tens of thousands, of dollars into a venture where there is no guaranteed return. Instead, investors who are interested in getting involved in Bitcoin might want to purchase bitcoins from exchange, or shares of crypto-mining stocks, which grant exposure to publicly traded mining companies.

NIH director Francis Collins says there's 'reason to be pretty optimistic' vaccines will be effective against the Omicron variant

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 15:50
National Institutes of Health director Dr. Francis Collins.
  • NIH head says there's reason to be "optimistic" that COVID-19 vaccines would work against Omicron.
  • Collins urged people to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and to get their boosters.
  • The Omicron variant first emerged in South Africa where it has rapidly spread.

There is "reason to be pretty optimistic" that the available COVID-19 vaccines will be effective against the new Omicron variant of the virus, National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins said Monday.

"All of the other variants that have emerged during this COVID-19 pandemic have shown response to the vaccine, including Delta," Collins said on on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Collins urged people to get inoculated and get their booster shot if they've already been vaccinated.

"If there's a message I would like people to hear this morning is get the vaccinations and the boosters," he said. "This is the best way to protect yourself against Delta, which is still very much with us in the US and Omicron if it comes to the US, which it almost certainly will at some point."

Collins also said there's "reason to be optimistic" that COVID-19 antiviral pills — which have not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration — would work against Omicron.

Omicron, which contains more than 50 mutations, first emerged in South Africa where it has rapidly spread.

"We know that it is spreading quite rapidly in South Africa, so it probably is highly contagious," Collins said. "We don't know if it causes severe disease or mild disease — that's going to take a little while to sort out because it's still early days."

Collins said that it will likely be known in roughly to two to three weeks whether the available COVID-19 vaccines are effective against the Omicron variant.

China's air force used its latest flight near Taiwan to show off a new capability

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 15:49
A Chinese Y-20 airlifter at the Zhuhai air show, October 31, 2016.
  • A variant of the Y-20 can refuel fighter jets and bombers mid-air, expanding the PLA Air Force's operational range.
  • Its debut outing comes after US lawmakers vow "rock-solid" support for Taipei in a surprise visit to the island.

An oil tanker aircraft joined mainland China's air patrol near Taiwan for the first time on Sunday, according to the island's defence ministry, a move an analyst said was to show the PLA's boosted attack ability.

The Y-20 aerial refuelling aircraft was sent with 26 military planes — 18 fighter jets, five nuclear-capable H-6 bombers, two KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft and a Y-9 transport aircraft — into Taiwan's air-defence identification zone (ADIZ), prompting Taipei to scramble fighter jets and deploy missile systems for monitoring.

The H-6 bombers and six of the fighter jets flew south of Taiwan into the Bashi Channel separating Taiwan from the Philippines before steering out into the Pacific and returning to the mainland, according to a map provided by the Taiwanese defence ministry.

Beijing has been sending patrols into the island's ADIZ on almost a daily basis since late September last year. The ADIZ is not the same as Taiwan's territorial air space but a self-declared space that is monitored for security purposes.

A Chinese Y-20 aerial-refueling variant.

The Y-20 is a Chinese domestically developed large cargo plane. The aerial tanker variant of the Y-20 can refuel J-20 fighter jets and H-6 bombers mid-air using the probe-and-drogue refuelling method, which could expand the operational range of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force to more than 8,000 km (4,970 miles) and combat radius to 3,000 km, according to a Global Times report.

It is widely expected that the tanker variant of the Y-20 will work together with — and eventually replace — the PLA's few imported Il-78 tankers and the domestically developed but less capable HU-6, according to the report.

Military website Defensenews.com reported in February that serial production of the Y-20 oil tanker variant had begun, citing satellite imagery.

Song Zhongping, a Hong Kong-based military commentator, said the Y-20 oil tanker variant could help Beijing prepare for military actions related to Taiwan.

"Oil tankers are important to refuel fighters and bombers during an attack mission, or can serve as the fuel backup for even longer operations into the Western Pacific," Song said. "As the Y-20 oil tanker variant is an indigenous aircraft, it means China's refuelling abilities can be fully guaranteed and no longer reliant on other countries."

However, the four-engine Y-20 is still powered by Russian turbofan engines. The PLA is developing its WS-20 high-bypass turbofan for the Y-20 family, although the engine is not expected to enter production before 2024.

Relations between Beijing and Taipei further deteriorated after several US lawmakers vowed "rock-solid" support for Taipei in a surprise one-day visit to the island on Friday, which drew immediate criticism from Beijing the same day.

Taiwan has been self-ruled since the two sides split during a civil war in 1949, but mainland China considers the island part of its own territory. Beijing said it would use military means to reunify with the island if necessary.

The 11 most exciting electric vehicles hitting the road next year, from Ford's F-150 Lightning to an ultra-sleek Cadillac SUV

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 15:43
The Genesis GV60.
  • Uninspired by the electric cars currently available? Lots more options are coming your way.
  • Tons of exciting EVs are hitting US streets in 2022 from startups and established car companies.
  • The Ford F-150 Lightning, Cadillac's first EV, and Subaru's debut e-SUV all arrive next year.
  • See more stories on Insider's business page.
BMW i4The BMW i4.

The new, gigantic beaver-tooth grille that adorns some of BMW's latest models is controversial, to say the least. But if you want to drive the luxury carmaker's first true electric sedan come 2022, you'll have to get on board.

The i4 will deliver 335 horsepower and a range of around 300 miles, BMW says. A sportier version promises 536 horsepower — at the expense of some range, of course.

Bollinger B1The Bollinger B1.

Bollinger Motors was supposed to deliver its first rugged vehicles in 2021, but now says production will start in late 2022. That means we have some chance of seeing these things on the road by the close of that year.

The B1 SUV looks more like a vintage Land Rover than any sleek new EV of the 2020s, which I think is pretty neat. But these vehicles don't come cheap, despite their exposed rivets and manual crank windows. A B1 will cost you $125,000.

Bollinger B2The Bollinger B2.

The B2 shares a basic platform with the B1, but has a little more space for stuff out back thanks to its bed. Like the B1, it has useful features like a pass-through that goes all the way down the center of the vehicle. Also like its fraternal twin, it's aiming for a range of 200 miles and a base price of $125,000.

By the numbers, the B2 will be able to hand with the best of them. Bollinger says the dual-motor truck will be able to tow 7,500 lbs and have a payload capacity of 5,000 pounds.

Cadillac LyriqThe Cadillac Lyriq.

In case you weren't aware, Cadillac is going all-electric. Its first EV, the Lyriq SUV, hits dealerships in 2022 with an attractive base price of $59,995. It'll compete with the Tesla Model Y, Jaguar I-Pace, and Audi E-Tron.

The long, sleek EV will deliver more than 300 miles of range, GM says. Cadillac began accepting $100 reservations in September. Expect it to showcase all of the latest and greatest tech GM has to offer, including a 33-inch driver display and Super Cruise, the company's hands-free driving feature.

Canoo Lifestyle VehicleThe Canoo Lifestyle Vehicle.

Although EV startup Canoo's model names may be bland, its vehicles themselves are anything but.

The Lifestyle Vehicle, a pill-shaped van that Canoo says can be adapted for all sorts of commercial and consumer uses, is set to launch in late 2022. Canoo says it has the interior space of a large SUV and the footprint of a compact car.

It starts at $34,750 and promises 250 miles of range. A Premium version will come with seven seats and a panoramic glass roof, while a future Adventure trim sports roof racks and a tow hitch.

Ford F-150 LightningThe Ford F-150 Lightning.

Ford's F-Series pickup isn't just the best-selling truck in the US — it's the most popular vehicle, period. If car companies want to bring cleaner vehicles to the masses, it's going to take electric versions of vehicles people already love.

The F-150 Lightning starts at around $40,000 for a basic work truck, while the consumer-oriented XLT trim starts at around $55,000. The truck offers unique features like a giant frunk and the ability to power your house in a blackout. As I learned during a test ride, it's mighty quick, too.

The F-150 Lightning promises up to 300 miles of range and deliveries start in spring 2022.

Fisker OceanThe Fisker Ocean.

EV startup Fisker, founded in 2016, plans to start producing its first model, the Ocean SUV, in late 2022. The SUV will be built by Magna Steyr, an Austrian contract manufacturer. Fisker is the second car company from Henrik Fisker, whose Fisker Automotive sold the hybrid Karma luxury sedan starting in 2011 and went out of business in 2014.

We don't know many details about the Ocean yet, but Fisker says it'll have a starting price of $37,499.

Kia EV6The Kia EV6.

Plenty of battery-powered Cadillacs, BMWs, and Benzes on the way, but it's nice to see more mainstream options are in the pipeline too. The EV6, the latest EV from Kia, is an SUV-hatchback thing that the company promises will get up to 300 miles of range.

Kia hasn't released pricing yet, but expect the EV6 to run you somewhere in the mid-$40,000 range to start. It'll come in all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive versions.

Genesis GV60The Genesis GV60.

Genesis, Hyundai's luxury brand, is getting into the EV game as well. Its first entry: the GV60, a higher-end counterpart to the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Like those two vehicles, the GV60 has a hatchback shape that's refreshing in a car market where hatchbacks are a dying breed. Plus, I actually dig its bug-like mug.

It'll be available in rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, and performance variants.

Mercedes-Benz EQBThe Mercedes-Benz EQB.

Mercedes-Benz is preparing an onslaught of new electric SUVs and sedans over the next few years. But if any of its models are going to sell in real numbers, it won't be the $100,000 EQS sedan or the undoubtedly more expensive electric G-Wagen

The EQB, though, has a real shot. The company's first electric SUV for the US, the EQB will check a lot of boxes for a lot of people. It'll have seating for seven, a small-ish footprint, and a more approachable starting price somewhere around $50,000. Mercedes pegs range at around 260 miles and says a long-range version is in the works.

Subaru SolterraThe Subaru Solterra.

Subaru's first EV is coming in mid-2022 through a partnership with Toyota. Accordingly, the Subaru Solterra, from what we can gather from teaser photos, looks nearly identical to Toyota's upcoming bZ4X SUV

There's not much we know about the Solterra, except that it will come standard with all-wheel drive, like most Subarus.

US stocks bounce back from sell-off as panic over Omicron variant eases

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 15:37
Stocks have risen sharply over the last year, helping the Dow Jones finally break the 36,000 barrier.
  • US stocks jumped above 1% on Monday, recovering less than half of Friday's steep losses.
  • The move higher comes as investors assess the ongoing risk of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
  • Pfizer and Moderna are testing the effectiveness of its vaccines against Omicron, as well as new vaccines specifically targeting the variant.

US stocks gained about 1% on Monday, recovering some of the losses seen during last Friday's shortened holiday trading session.

The 2% slide in stocks on Friday was sparked by the identification of a new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, which is thought to be more contagious than prior virus mutations like Delta.

But investors are reassessing the risks on Monday after vaccine makers Moderna and Pfizer said they are testing the effectiveness of current vaccines against the new strain, as well as new vaccines specifically targeting the Omicron variant. If needed, new vaccine formulations could be ready by early 2022, according to Moderna.

Here's where US indexes stood shortly after the 9:30 a.m. ET open on Monday:

Oil prices are following the path of stocks and rebounding sharply in Monday trades following Friday's rout, as concerns of potential country lockdowns to combat the Omicron variant seem less likely as early reports suggest only mild symptoms from the new variant.

One investor who sees a bullish setup for equities is Bill Ackman, who said on Twitter that if Omicron symptoms are indeed mild, it would be bullish for stocks and bearish for bonds.

Shares of Moderna jumped 10% on Monday and extended its two-day gain to more than 30% as it revealed its own vaccine plans for the Omicron variant. The surge helped stem a 45% loss from its record high of nearly $500.

AMC Entertainment jumped about 2% on Monday after the movie theater chain said it would offer 86,000 NFTs to early ticket buyers of the upcoming Spider-Man movie.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil jumped as much as 6.74% to $72.74 per barrel. Brent crude, oil's international benchmark, rose as much as 5.65% to $76.83 per barrel.

Gold rose as much as 0.13% to $1,787.90 per ounce.

5 steps to start researching and buying stocks like the Wall Street pros

Businessinsider - Mon, 11/29/2021 - 15:35
Risk tolerance and budget are two key factors that should inform your stock research.
  • Your budget, investment style, and risk tolerance should guide your stock research.
  • Understanding a company's fundamentals is key to finding quality stocks.
  • Certain documents, such as a company's annual report, reveal key financial information and risks.
  • Visit Insider's Investing Reference library for more stories.

For individual investors, choosing the right stocks can feel like a daunting task. But if you want to manage your own portfolio, you can apply the same kind of techniques that the pros on Wall Street use in their research and analysis.

Not sure how to begin? Use these 5 steps to help guide your approach.

Step 1: Understand the types of stock analysis

The first step to researching stocks is to understand the different types of stock analysis. When researching stocks, the three main types of analyses are:

  • Fundamental analysis: Examines fundamentals such as earnings, cash flow, and financial position to forecast performance.
  • Technical analysis: Uses past prices and trading patterns to forecast future price changes.
  • Quantitative analysis: Uses mathematical and statistical modeling to assess the value of a stock.

Each approach has its merits. However, in most cases, fundamental analysis should be your primary tool to assess the value of a given stock, according to Robert Johnson, chairman and CEO at index provider Economic Index Associates. "Investors should concern themselves primarily with a company or asset's fundamentals (earnings, cash flow, financial position, products, and the like)," he says.

The reason for this is that fundamental analysis breaks down the real-world performance of a company. Technical analysis, on the other hand, may reveal anomalies in an asset's price. But those can occur for many reasons, such as negative news coverage.

"Technical analysis is an assessment of statistics generated by market activity, such as past prices and volume," says Melanie Mortimer, president at SIFMA Foundation, which provides financial literacy programs. "Technical analysts use charts and other tools to project a security's potential future activity, taking cues from patterns in the data."

Quantitative analysis may use some of the same metrics as technical analysis but can incorporate statistical modeling in an attempt to determine whether a stock is a good investment opportunity. "Quantitative funds tend to rely more heavily on valuation metrics and market technicals such as price momentum," says Carl Ludwigson, director of manager research at Bel Air Investment Advisors.

Quick tip: Start your analysis by checking a company's fundamentals, such as earnings, profit margin, and revenue growth. You can then use technical and quantitative analysis to supplement your fundamental analysis to gain deeper insight.

Step 2: Establish your risk tolerance and budget

It's important to establish both your risk tolerance and budget before you research stocks. After all, there are many types of stocks and theoretically no limit to how much you can invest.

For instance, blue-chip stocks such as those included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average may provide a consistent return but not have quite the potential for gains  as a startup company. However, there is naturally a greater chance of a startup performing poorly, or even going out of business. Therefore, you must determine the balance between how much risk you are willing to take and what kind of return you expect.

"With a longer time to retire and fewer financial obligations, an individual has the ability to absorb some volatility in their investment portfolio, knowing that time can help balance any short-term losses with longer-term gains, or the ups and downs of economic cycles," says Mortimer.

Willingness to bear risk, on the other hand, is more subjective. "One way to gauge a person's willingness to bear risk is to simply ask the question: If your portfolio suddenly declined in value by X percent, would you lose sleep over it and suffer substantial regret?" Johnson says. "If the answer switches from yes to no when X is 10 percent, then the person has very little willingness to bear risk, and quite frankly, has limited investment options."

Your budget also plays a role. There is a large difference between a 10% return on a $1,000 investment and a 10% return on a $100,000 investment. In other words, if your budget is relatively small, you may have to take bigger risks to see the return you want. That is not unusual, though, as those who are early in their careers tend to have less to invest — but also more time to take risks. Understanding where you are on this spectrum is key to forming your investment strategy.

Step 3: Know which investing metrics to pay attention to

There's no shortage of investing metrics available, especially for larger, well-established companies. Some are more critical than others. Key metrics to consider include:

Which metrics are most important depends in large part on the style of investing you prefer. For instance, two common forms of investing are value and growth investing. Value investing involves buying stock in companies that are undervalued, therefore selling at a discounted rate. Growth investing, on the other hand, means buying stocks of companies that are expected to grow at a rate faster than the market.

"Value-oriented managers tend to focus on price-to-book, price-to-cash flow, and other measures that indicate a depressed price compared to the normalized earnings or intrinsic value of a business which creates a margin of safety," says Ludwigson. In other words, for value investors, the key metrics are those that indicate the price is lower than competitors' stocks, such as on a price-to-earnings or price-to-book basis. The lower these ratios are, the better.

One thing to watch out for with value investing is the tendency toward mean reversion, according to Johnson. "Historically, asset prices and historical returns gradually move toward the long-term mean. So, if a particular stock is selling at a low P/E or price-to-sales multiple, all else equal, the P/E or price-to-sales ratio will likely revert to the mean at some point," he says.

Growth investors take an entirely different approach, says Ludwigson. "Growth managers tend to focus on revenue and earnings growth with less focus on metrics like price-to-earnings as they expect the earnings to expand over time to justify the price," he says. Oftentimes, growth stocks are companies that have not fully matured, so revenue and earnings growth is more important than price.

Quick tip: Certain metrics are more important than others to pay attention to, depending on the style of investing. For instance, price-based metrics lend themselves to value investing, while growth investors focus more on growth of earnings and revenue.

Step 4: Find the data you need to start your research

Now that you have an idea of which companies you want to analyze, it's time to dive deeper. Here are some of the documents, reports, and tools you may want to check:

When first starting your research, you can check each company on an online brokerage's research platform as well as in stock screeners. These are a good way to check some of those metrics, like profit margin and price-to-earnings. Then, you can take a deeper dive into reports on the companies that look good.

There is no shortage of reports to detail the companies you are considering for investment. However, there are certain places you should direct your focus first, says Kevin L. Matthews II, founder of investment education company BuildingBread. "Any company that you're looking into usually has an investor relations section on the website. If you go there you can find any important press releases, financial documents, and  documents filed with the SEC like the 10-K and 10-Q," he says.

Matthews notes that the 10-K (the annual report) is his favorite document to help with company research as it outlines performance as well as potential risks and other strategic and financial details.

In addition to reports found on a company's investor relations page, there are some databases you should know about, says Johnson. "The SEC's role of running the EDGAR database is of utmost importance to investors. The key types of documents on EDGAR include Annual reports (10-Ks), Quarterly Reports (10-Qs), Proxy Statements (DEF 14As), Prospectuses (S-1s), and Interim Reports of Material Events (8-Ks)," he says.

Step 5: Narrow your focus and pick stocks that fit your portfolio

As you have probably already discovered, there aren't any magic bullets that fit perfectly into your portfolio. Instead, you should look for the investments that best align with your investing goals. For example, do you prefer value or growth investing? What is your budget and what is your risk tolerance?

Once you answer these questions, you can start to formulate your investing strategy. Certain metrics, such as price-to-earnings, lend themselves more to value investing, while metrics like profit margin are more important for growth investing. You can then hone in on a company's fundamentals using an online broker and company reports to identify the right stocks for you.

Depending on how risky a given stock is, you can weigh it against your risk tolerance and budget to determine whether to invest — and if so, how much. Then, you can continue to evaluate using future quarterly and annual reports to ensure the company still fits within your strategy.

The financial takeaway

Researching stocks can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. First, determine your preferred investment style, budget, and risk tolerance. Then, you can use an online broker as well as internal and external company filings to find out more about each stock you are considering.

Once you have done that, you're ready to start investing. Be sure to continue to evaluate each of your investments, either quarterly or annually. You may want to make changes if a company no longer aligns with your strategy — just be aware of potential capital gains taxes if you decide to sell.
